Fresh Taco Seasoning

Fairly quick and easy to make, fresh is most excellent!
Prep Time 15 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Equipment

  • 1 cutting board and knife
  • 1 medium sized bowl

Ingredients

  • 1 red bell pepper - could really be any color bell pepper, I just think the red looks nice, haha
  • 1 large onion - can be sweet or a red onion, depending on your preference - both are awesome
  • 1 habanero chile (maybe more, maybe less depending on your taste for hot!) - you can also swap the habanero chili out for a jalapeño if you'd like
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 Tbsp dried oregano
  • 2 tsp ground cumin

Instructions

  • Combine dried ingredients in a bowl.
  • Chop up red bell pepper and sweet onion, not too crazy small, but not too big. Add to dry ingredients in your bowl.
  • Smash and mince garlic cloves - lay garlic clove on cutting board, smash with side of knife, then mince. This helps super bring out the flavor. Add the garlic to the other ingredients in the bowl.
  • Mince habanero chile (or jalapeño). Add to other ingredients and mix well.
  • And you're done making the fresh taco seasoning and can put the mixture in the refrigerator to pull out at taco time.

Notes

Habanero chiles (and jalapeños) can be HOT and do come in a variety of sizes. I always taste a small piece of the ones I’m going to use before I mince it to determine how much to add to a recipe. DO NOT TOUCH YOUR FACE UNTIL YOU'VE WASHED YOUR HANDS! Hot pepper in the eyes is not cool at all.
Taco Time! Once your taco meat has been browned on the stove, add the bowl of taco seasoning and continue stirring until the onions are thoroughly cooked. This will ensure all the flavors of the taco seasoning are fully integrated into the meat.
