Freeze dried ground beef, chili, dog treats and onions – this is a mishmash of stuff!
Yep, this one is a mix of things, haha 🙂
So excited to do freeze dried ground beef, chili, and dog treats!!! I had about a pound of ground beef, about the same of chili, some turkey giblets (cooked) to make dog treats, and some onion skins and scraps. Since nothing was raw and I didn’t care if a bit of oniony flavor got into the other things, I decided to just do it all together.
This is our 13th batch in the Ice Queen (a Harvest Right Home Pro Medium freeze dryer), and I still get so excited every time!!!
For this one, I just put all the onion scraps on trays in as flat a layer as I could. The onions took up three of the trays. I spread out the ground beef and chili pretty flat, and did the same with the turkey giblets for the doggos. Everything was pre-frozen. Then I put it all into my Ice Queen freeze dryer and started her up!
Yummy, shelf stable, just fun to make!
So for the freeze dried ground beef and chili, I just vacuum sealed them in jars with oxygen absorbers, labeled them, and put them on the shelf. The dog treats are in a jar but they’re just out. If our doggos had it their way, they’d all be gone by now, lol!
The onion scraps I put into a blender and blended them into a semi powder. If I had a different kind of grinder or a mill of sorts, it would have been even finer powder. But it smells and tastes great, and I’m not crazy picky about it being super fine or anything. I put some in a jar I vacuum sealed and some by our stove to use next time I need it. Super stoked with how it came out:)
So how long did it take to freeze dry it all?
The freeze dried ground beef and chili, dog treats and onions… all of it took 16 hours and 45 minutes to freeze dry.
The 2 hour long defrost was definitely needed after this batch.
Happy freeze drying!!
The Ice Queen woke me up at 230am lol. So I put the meats in jars and sealed them, then went back to bed. Obviously, my timing on things isn’t all that great yet🤣 pic.twitter.com/knhUO0XQJv
