Freeze dried pickles

Pickles, really? Lol. Yeah.

Why freeze dry pickles?

I really just wanted to see how they would turn out and give them a try. Pickle chips sounds really good to me, so I wanted to see if freeze dried pickles would be sort of like chips. I used my own homemade dill pickle slices for this:)

For the pickles, I laid them out in a single layer on the trays. One of the trays also included some pickled shredded carrots I canned over the summer. I really enjoy the carrots, so wanted to be able to set some aside freeze dried to have any time I’d like.

This batch also included the baked beans and green olives. So I had just one and a half trays of the pickles, maybe 1/3 of a tray of the pickled shredded carrots, half a tray of the olives, and then three trays of baked beans. I did pre-freeze all five trays, then into the Ice Queen freeze dryer (Harvest Right Home Pro Medium) they went:)

Really excited to see how the pickles are when they’re finished! I really think it could go either way… they could be awesome and just how I’m imagining! Or they could be complete garbage, lol. We shall see!

These pickles are amaaaaazing!

I’m actually blown away at how awesome these are. They are 100% like chips, but they’re pickles. So freaking cool!

I didn’t even bother using an oxygen absorber or fully sealing the freeze dried pickles. They won’t last long enough to go bad, hahaha! Not to mention, these are keto friendly, so it’s like inexpensive keto potato chips, but better!

So how long did the pickles take?

Considering they were also with the shredded carrots, baked beans, and green olives, total time was 23 hours. I think without the green olives, time could have been cut down by several hours.

With this batch and it taking so long, I definitely needed to defrost the freeze dryer after, so I just let it do the auto-set 2 hours and that was perfect.

Happy freeze drying!!
