It’s our 3rd batch! Jalapeños and tomatoes – freeze dried (of course, lol)
This is one I really wanted to do, because I love tomatoes and use them in tons of things, and I also enjoy adding jalapeños to some recipes. Of course, I also like to have jalapeños around for whenever we have loaded nachos too:)
When I chopped up the jalapeños, I did wear gloves. I got rid of a lot of the seeds, which was easy for the ones I just diced. But for the sliced jalapeños (requested by hubby), I ended up having to leave some seeds. Otherwise it would have taken a heck of a lot longer to get them all prepped!
Once chopped, I did pre-freeze both prior to freeze drying. I put them in the freezer the evening before they were to be freeze dried.
Jalapeños and tomatoes freeze dried are AWESOME!
I honestly wasn’t sure how the sliced jalapeños were going to come out, but I am stoked!! Both the sliced and diced jalapeños, plus the diced tomatoes, came out really, really well.
How long did the jalapeños and tomatoes take in the Ice Queen?
For this batch of freeze drying, my total time was 16 hours. I then needed to do the two hour defrost of the machine.
I put them in jars with an oxygen absorber, then used a rechargeable jar sealer to finish them up. Seeing our shelves fill up with more long term food storage is just incredible. It really makes me feel so much more food secure! Not to mention, being able to grab these ingredients when I don’t have fresh things is obviously amazing!
Happy freeze drying!!
