Equipment

  • 1 Crock pot (a kinda big one) or large stockpot
  • 1 Vegetable peeler
  • 1 Blender or food processor
  • 1 Water bath canner
  • Jars, rings, and lids for canning

Ingredients

  • 20 apples (fairly large ones) you can use any kind you'd like, I like a mixture of red delicious and honey crisp
  • 1 cup sugar I do about a cup of sugar per 5 apples, some people do more, this is about taste and can be adjusted later
  • 3 Tbsp allspice again, can start with less and adjust later
  • 3 Tbsp cinnamon again, can start with less and adjust later

Instructions

  • Peel and core apples.
  • Add apples, sugar, allspice, and cinnamon to crock pot.
  • Cook on low for about 4 hours.
  • Start prepping jars for canning around the 3.5 hour mark.
  • Dump the apple mixture into a blender and blend really well - at this point, you can taste a little bit and add more sugar and spices if you'd like.
  • Pour mixture into sterilized canning jars, leaving about 1/4 inch head space.
  • Wipe rims - I use a paper towel with a little white vinegar on it. Then place lids and rings onto jars.
  • Process in water bath canner for 15 minutes (adjusting for altitude), remove lid and let sit for about 5 minutes.
  • Remove from canner and wait 24 hours before removing rings and checking seals.

Some apple butter options…

Apple butter is super fun to make! One great thing about this recipe is that it’s also very easy to customize. The spices can be modified to create totally different and unique flavors of apple butter.

Some variations I’ve made are:

  • made it a bit spicy by adding some chili powder
  • made it more tart by using Granny Smith apples instead of sweeter ones
  • made it sweeter by adding more sugar
  • made it just a bit different by modifying spices

This is a fun recipe that even the kids can help with… enjoy:)
